Belief is Everything.

Why write? Why be an author? Why make it up?
You want an easy answer....there is one: Because that is what we do. But look deeper into it and find many shades of the answer to the question: Why write? I suppose some justification is needed... I write because it is a compulsion, an obsession that took hold and hasn't let go. Even when not actually hammering the keys I am often in that alongside world in my head; dreaming of the scenes in the story arc of that universe.
I remember the moment I wanted to be a writer. I sat in rapt fascination as my teacher at junior school read "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." by C S Lewis. Nothing could compare to that first taste of the glimmering glittering world wrapped in snow beyond the wardrobe door. I was certain from that moment that I wanted to create a world that was strange and wonderful and both teasing the edge of science and magic at once. I avidly read all C S Lewis' works including the planetary science fiction series (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength.) I had found my muse, I read alot of the Christian Apologetics too; and in it I found a voice.... and so that is how I knew I needed to find my own. The sound of the author telling the story.
My next book is set in a snowy place, as I knew that in the pristine snow of a devilish presence a story could begin... I began with that moment. And so....what is your story? The story you tell yourself; or the story you tell others?
Why do you write? For Love; For Money; For Ambition; For Social Prestige?
Your reasons....well I believe that a writer reveals their sources. What I mean, is that if you love what you do it shines through.
Conversely, if you are in it for the personal glory? Well.... I think wanting things is good. Let's not practice any false humility here. But let your love for writing the story never be soured by a desire to gain leverage in the world.
Thankyou to all those who write stories, and write them well; whatever you believe the reason to be. The world is better with us in it than without.

SPRINGTIME

Are we there yet?

This has been bitter and cold; and yet it comes late with a cautious joy at the new Spring. The sunlight I mean.... I actually took my coat off for a while... and cheeks burn with the radiant heat for the first time  since; I can't remember when. I don't think it is good for us to not see the sun, but too much is bad for us too I am told.

Okay, so the point is....
Being burdened by the rule of the time; as the days lengthen there seems to be more ease, less constriction, a long let out breath so deeply held. Do you remember the scent of Spring? Like a taste but on the air? Time to create, to return to the joy of being after a bitter brutal winter.
I know that in this northern place we are upside down in our seasons. But it is,  as they say a Metaphor. Sometimes there is warmth, even when the clouds gather..... time to reflect on the things within yearning to find expression. As so the rain falls.

Over the Moon

Over the moon, and under the stars,
Where thoughts roam, lost in sand bars.
wherever you are, in being beneath the bright arc of the sky,
The lost breath the wind steals.
I had you there, in hello and good bye.
I had you my love.... but it dies, it dies.
Nothing is gone, so they say, so they say.
But for one brief brittle moment,
I wish I had one more day.

Sam is a detective, and what do detectives do? Well, detect acts of crime, survey the misdoings of of the mistakenly lovelorn, eat sandwiches, and look for lost cats. Since going into the private sector Sam is holding down another job of the hush-hush variety, and being rather good at keeping secrets is immensely skilled at keeping the bizarre and downright unnerving out of his rather mundane private life in his indeterminate flat that he shares with Camille, a rather demanding female of the feline variety. However, Sam's life is about to get very complicated indeed, when his beloved Camille (who is convinced that her name is NOT such and only returns when Sam shouts "Haddock!") finds a startling piece of evidence of an unusual and seemingly impossible crime. With Camille holding this inexplicable object in her jaws, it is now time for Sam to get a grip, Man Up, and face his greatest fears: mega packs of Whiskas, electric tin openers and the scene of a crime far closer to home than he ever expected.....

"Cloud Field" *OUT SOON*

Davey Milnes is a Twenty-Something Skinny Graduate working for a Graphic Design company. His mundane and rather unexciting life is to be changed for the better he hopes when he joins a Scientific expedition into the frozen wastes of an unexplored Northern region. However, the "Science" that he and the Expedtion Team have become involved in is a bizarre experiment into parallel realities. To his horror Davey realises that they are all the subjects of someone else's experiment, and in order to escape the power of the "Cloud Field" he has to go beyond the limits of endurance and find the answer to the secrets at the heart of this inhospitable land. He finds that friends and enemies alike are not what they seem, and the further you go the more the team forget where they came from....even who they are. When the past and the future can be changed; even he leaves, can he escape those who seek to control this power over his life and even his memories?

Looking out to Sea.

I find there is a wave that breaks
A story that takes you by surprise
A last long look at imprints in the sand
When sea washes them into oblivion.

There is a past view that dies
In the sunrise glinting on the water
Stand here for one moment
Stay; in that thought
Even when the light has gone from the sky
May the light reflect from water
Within your inner eye.
