Don't Judge a Cat by its Cover.

Just because I'm a Cat doesn't mean you're smarter than me!
Or perhaps you thought I was actually human? Well yes.... okay, you got me. But the reason cats do not type is because their supposed "Owners" won't let them on the computer.
A measure of intelligence is not whether you know what something is but what it knows itself to be.
A smart cat.... or a human for that matter might just decide not to tell you.
When the world is about to end then, and only then will we know who was really wise....
There will be some surprizes, I think.

In Memory of Imagination.

I remember being a child. I remember the bright white clouds and the sky arc above me. I believed in angels because noone had told me to doubt.
Where does it end? Why do we regret? The things that make us who we are are not the things of the world....they are the things that slip with somehow believed shame through the cracks and gaps of life. If we call it that.... where is your faith on what is possible? Where is your faith? Not a cold stone place full of stiff adults....No. But that bright dancing glowing iridescent feeling that makes you fly while you stand still.
There is always time to throw off the "grown-up", that sensible, cold, worldly logical being that strangulates your soul.
So when I find my time, at the end of my time: I remember Angels, I laughed and cried and lived and embraced life....
The story lives in the telling.
The little child is you and me, is all of us. If we want it to be.

Will the real person please stand out.

I used to think that identity as a person is easily defined. Now I believe that it is an indeterminate art; perhaps a science for fools; or a hobby for the wise.
In a novel, well it gets worse. Here are people you really cannot control, whose extremes and eccentricies are beyond the scope of the most determined psychoanalysis. I often conclude that writers live out their inner selves in their characters; but here is the but to that: as much depth as we possess, I believe we express. Or, to put it another way: people are only as deep as the person who created them. The imagined world that convinces me of its reality is the one that has deeply satisfying expressions of those people who habitually invade a writer's dreams...sleeping or awake. They are the ones that others love and remember for the rest of their lives. I always think of a little girl called Lucy. She refused to stop believing in what she knew she saw and forgave her brother for a terrible betrayal.
You know who I mean don't you?
In falling through doorways to other worlds we should take out the best of those people and let them speak, and breathe, and become real in our hearts.

Belief is Everything.

Why write? Why be an author? Why make it up?
You want an easy answer....there is one: Because that is what we do. But look deeper into it and find many shades of the answer to the question: Why write? I suppose some justification is needed... I write because it is a compulsion, an obsession that took hold and hasn't let go. Even when not actually hammering the keys I am often in that alongside world in my head; dreaming of the scenes in the story arc of that universe.
I remember the moment I wanted to be a writer. I sat in rapt fascination as my teacher at junior school read "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." by C S Lewis. Nothing could compare to that first taste of the glimmering glittering world wrapped in snow beyond the wardrobe door. I was certain from that moment that I wanted to create a world that was strange and wonderful and both teasing the edge of science and magic at once. I avidly read all C S Lewis' works including the planetary science fiction series (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength.) I had found my muse, I read alot of the Christian Apologetics too; and in it I found a voice.... and so that is how I knew I needed to find my own. The sound of the author telling the story.
My next book is set in a snowy place, as I knew that in the pristine snow of a devilish presence a story could begin... I began with that moment. And so....what is your story? The story you tell yourself; or the story you tell others?
Why do you write? For Love; For Money; For Ambition; For Social Prestige?
Your reasons....well I believe that a writer reveals their sources. What I mean, is that if you love what you do it shines through.
Conversely, if you are in it for the personal glory? Well.... I think wanting things is good. Let's not practice any false humility here. But let your love for writing the story never be soured by a desire to gain leverage in the world.
Thankyou to all those who write stories, and write them well; whatever you believe the reason to be. The world is better with us in it than without.

SPRINGTIME

Are we there yet?

This has been bitter and cold; and yet it comes late with a cautious joy at the new Spring. The sunlight I mean.... I actually took my coat off for a while... and cheeks burn with the radiant heat for the first time  since; I can't remember when. I don't think it is good for us to not see the sun, but too much is bad for us too I am told.

Okay, so the point is....
Being burdened by the rule of the time; as the days lengthen there seems to be more ease, less constriction, a long let out breath so deeply held. Do you remember the scent of Spring? Like a taste but on the air? Time to create, to return to the joy of being after a bitter brutal winter.
I know that in this northern place we are upside down in our seasons. But it is,  as they say a Metaphor. Sometimes there is warmth, even when the clouds gather..... time to reflect on the things within yearning to find expression. As so the rain falls.

Over the Moon

Over the moon, and under the stars,
Where thoughts roam, lost in sand bars.
wherever you are, in being beneath the bright arc of the sky,
The lost breath the wind steals.
I had you there, in hello and good bye.
I had you my love.... but it dies, it dies.
Nothing is gone, so they say, so they say.
But for one brief brittle moment,
I wish I had one more day.

Sam is a detective, and what do detectives do? Well, detect acts of crime, survey the misdoings of of the mistakenly lovelorn, eat sandwiches, and look for lost cats. Since going into the private sector Sam is holding down another job of the hush-hush variety, and being rather good at keeping secrets is immensely skilled at keeping the bizarre and downright unnerving out of his rather mundane private life in his indeterminate flat that he shares with Camille, a rather demanding female of the feline variety. However, Sam's life is about to get very complicated indeed, when his beloved Camille (who is convinced that her name is NOT such and only returns when Sam shouts "Haddock!") finds a startling piece of evidence of an unusual and seemingly impossible crime. With Camille holding this inexplicable object in her jaws, it is now time for Sam to get a grip, Man Up, and face his greatest fears: mega packs of Whiskas, electric tin openers and the scene of a crime far closer to home than he ever expected.....

"Cloud Field" *OUT SOON*

Davey Milnes is a Twenty-Something Skinny Graduate working for a Graphic Design company. His mundane and rather unexciting life is to be changed for the better he hopes when he joins a Scientific expedition into the frozen wastes of an unexplored Northern region. However, the "Science" that he and the Expedtion Team have become involved in is a bizarre experiment into parallel realities. To his horror Davey realises that they are all the subjects of someone else's experiment, and in order to escape the power of the "Cloud Field" he has to go beyond the limits of endurance and find the answer to the secrets at the heart of this inhospitable land. He finds that friends and enemies alike are not what they seem, and the further you go the more the team forget where they came from....even who they are. When the past and the future can be changed; even he leaves, can he escape those who seek to control this power over his life and even his memories?

Looking out to Sea.

I find there is a wave that breaks
A story that takes you by surprise
A last long look at imprints in the sand
When sea washes them into oblivion.

There is a past view that dies
In the sunrise glinting on the water
Stand here for one moment
Stay; in that thought
Even when the light has gone from the sky
May the light reflect from water
Within your inner eye.

How Long Is A Piece Of String?

Has anyone a definitive word count for each type of piece?
A Nice Cup of Tea and a sit down.
Is a novel of a minimum length? Are there any actual rules about this? I found myself looking at word counts in relation to value for money when I'm buying an eBook.  For my own work I came up with the ideal solution; every 33,000 words roughly will cost $1. From observation that is a fair price. I think that the reader doesn't want to pay alot for a shorter less meaty read, when there is another book for the same price for triple the word count.
My main gripe is NOT that shorter books are offered online... far from it. I just read a great Novella by Brandon Sanderson and really enjoyed it. But that is the key, it was called a NOVELLA. It didn't pretend to be a novel, which I understand to be a book of 60,000 words or above. So I was a happy customer, the description matched the content. Of course I want to buy a book that is well written, exciting, intriguing and enjoyable; but the feeling that I might run out of string is not pleasant. Normally I like long books! I love to get my teeth into something when I have the time.... that is the thing at the moment. The piece of string has to be the length to suit the reader and their reading habits, personal preferences, and tastes in fiction.
But just as I like to get a big vat of strawberries and guzzle them to my hearts content, I don't want to find out I could have got a better, juicer... and larger punnet from the stall next door.
I think it makes sense to not try to get away with describing your short story/novella as a novel, when it plainly isn't. I came across this recently, and having clicked onto the page of a writer whose "novels" were on display, was disappointed to find perilously low word counts. I felt offended because I write past the 100,000 word line every time. My next two novels will be both a good read.
Anyway.... food for thought. I ask that you sell your wares fairly, describe them accurately, and don't hike your prices through the roof! And if you are a savvy reader you'll already know what you would see as a bargain, and what IS good value. So let us reckon on our potential readers and future fans being given a good deal.

What is it all about? Please tell me....

I have noticed that alot of the time, we spend in life saying what cannot be done.....
As a relentless optimist, and annoyingly cheerful person at the most unfortunate point where I cross paths with misery laden souls; I ponder how utterly different life would be if for just one day everyone took to looking at all things in the most positive light they could. I mean that, and this is not a slight on those with real problems, but why not try it?
You have nothing to loose. Except some worry lines or a small modicum of smug delight in being as miserable as possible.
I can say this.... because I have had a bad week, not just in that someone nicked my parking space (they couldn't do that I don't have a car). Or someone ate all the chocolate cookies (I'm allergic to biscuits). But that the boiler broke totally on the coldest day of the year, I went to a funeral, and I had someone crying on my shoulder who was actually in need: kind of puts it into perspective doesn't it?
So I decided to count up all the good things. Because there are always alot more than you think! And remember that however bad any one thing is, it will pass.
Today the sun is shining. I will put it on my list of good things, smile, and look for others to add to it.
So here is a little good thing while I remember: Please note down voucher code VG39G and click link to get a FREE copy of my ebook
